REVOLUTION: Music through turmoil and change

In times of unease and change, music has been a vessel to channel the emotions and capture the soul of change through winding melodies of heartbreaking turmoil and hope for a new era. In this concert, we will explore music on themes surrounding major turns in history, and feature two young musicians that bring forth the hope of a new generation. Please join us as we perform our next concert: REVOLUTION.

Featured Works

  • Daniel Auber – Overture to La Muette de Portici
This opera distinguishes itself not only for its fiery music but also for its role in history. The opera itself is set around the 17th century Neapolitan Revolt against the Spanish occupation of Naples, led by a fisherman, Masaniello. A performance of La Muette de Protici was at the tipping point of the Belgian Revolution of 1830. Urgent, energetic, and fearless, Auber’s work shows how art can ignite the desire for freedom.

  • Jean Sibelius– Karelia Overture & Suite
Composed as Finland sought independence from Russian rule, Sibelius gave his people music that became a symbol of national pride. The Karelia Overture and Suite utilize sweeping melodies and folk idioms to call for fighting against oppression and an independent Finland.

Together, these works reflect the ways music can carry us through unrest and oppression. They remind us that even in times of struggle, art has the power to reveal beauty, resilience, and the drive toward change.
